Attention, muggles...

Harry Potter shops at Decatur CD. Or, he would, if he lived in Atlanta. Just a friendly reminder from your friends at DCD that the best way to take a break from a book binge is to stop by the store and peruse our plastic discs. Hope to see you all soon...

Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Ireland!

A friend of ours in Ireland hit us up on MySpace and sent us this photo. After viewing it, well, it's pretty obvious why we had to blog about it. Awesome! Click to enlarge, and for extra credit, leave your favorite Devo song in the comments.

New release Tuesday - 7/17/07

Boy howdy, there is something to be said for a tasty sandwich. Here we sit, ostensibly pondering tomorrow releases, but really, all we can think about is how delicious this bit o' Chick-fil-A tastes right now. Recently, in a righteous fit of rage, young Eliot pledged a boycott against the establishment because they don't serve chicken biscuits all day. He's taken his business to Zaxby's instead, where his idiosyncratic food desires are fulfilled consistently. You hear that, S. Truett Cathy? It's time to change your menu hours, lest you never win back the money and loyalty of our blonde-haired, baseball-playing, Japanese-psych-rock-listening, um, employee.

Wow. What just happened? Where are we? Is JFK still president? Maybe it's time to get to the new releases already. Check out this cut-and-dry list of artists that will have new CDs on our shelves on Tuesday:

Chemical Brothers
Editors
Garbage
Magic Numbers
Raul Malo
Meat Puppets
Robert Pollard
Teddy Thompson
Rooney
Suzanne Vega
Yellowcard
David Allen Coe (live)
Yesterday's New Quintet (Madlib)
The Cribs
Minnie Driver
Too Short
Ben Jelen
Emerson Hart
Eliza Gilkyson
Los Campesinos! (EP)
MXPX
Laurie Anderson (reissue)
Popa Chubby
Steve Kuhn
Rocket Summer
...and more!

As usual, holler at us if you're looking to pre-order, want us to hold something for you or don't see what you're looking for. Thanks...

Vanity Fair profiles Sylvester Stewart

Above: One of 14 shots from the VF slideshow

There was a fascinating -not to mention, super lengthy- article on Sly Stone in a recent Vanity Fair. The timing is pretty sweet as far as we're concerned, considering the recently released box set of his material (and its crazy-affordable single-disc reissue counterparts). He's such a mysterious and wonderful artist, and it's great to see someone attempt to get to the bottom of his elusive legacy.

"Will Sly show up?" the piece begins. "I sure hope so. I have an appointment with him. I've flown across the country and quadruple-checked to make sure we're still on."

Deerhunter takes on NYC

Normally, when a band is as insanely buzzed as Deerhunter, we tend to shy away. As Chuck D once taught us, "Don't believe the hype." Far too often, obscenely talked-about groups just can't live up to their own press, leading to the inevitable letdown upon actual listening. But take our word for it: Deerhunter is the real deal. We stock the band's self-titled debut, the gorgeously noisy full-length from early this year, Cryptograms, and the most recent EP, all with good reason. This is a young Atlanta band tapping into a certain intangible something, and when it comes to producing that something live or on record, the result is stunning to say the least.

On July 11th, amidst a short set of tour dates (they play the Pitchfork festival in Chicago tomorrow), the band played at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City. This isn't the first time Deerhunter's been to NYC, but it seems to be the most memorable. A writer for MTV called the evening "unforgettable," further gushing, "It was one of the most genius rock and roll performances I've ever witnessed." The Village Voice was similarly impressed claiming the show was "one of those moments you see wrinkly faces recalling in Behind the Music."

It's exciting to be part of such a vibrant, up-and-coming music scene. With bands like Deerhunter, Black Lips, Snowden and Manchester Orchestra making a dent across the nation, one can only hope that other excellent Atlanta artists like The Selmanaires, Rising Appalachia, Anna Kramer, Silver Lakes and countless others will get some attention as well. Don't take this for granted, folks. It's a great time to live in the Atlanta area.

Steve Albini wants YOU (to ask a question).

We stumbled across this link about a week ago on Stereogum, but are just getting around to posting it now. Apparently, this Internet message board called The 2+2 Forums got ahold of legendary music engineer and notoriously cranky person Steve Albini, a man who has worked with countless artists and bands, including Nirvana, Pixies, The Jesus Lizard, PJ Harvey, Low, Superchunk, Slint, The Breeders, Urge Overkill, Mogwai, Cheap Trick and others too numerous to mention. It's hard to say whether or not this is him, but whomever is answering the questions, if it's not him, it surely must be his biographer or closest friend. Either way, there is some awfully entertaining stuff within these pages:

Ask a music scene micro celebrity

Have fun reading, and feel free to leave your own question. Or, even better yet, leave your favorite response in the comments below. There are plenty to choose from.

Vote for Decatur CD in Creative Loafing!

Tomorrow is the last day that you can vote in Creative Loafing's Best of Atlanta 2007 poll. Without groveling too much, we'd like to point you in the general direction of said poll in hopes that you might pour some sugar on Decatur CD. Don't get overwhelmed, though. Despite the fact that there are 316 categories you can vote on, you only have to pick out 10 to be counted. Then again, we know you're all opinionated, so show your support for your local businesses and personalities! And hey, if you vote for DCD, well, all the better. Check it out:

Meanwhile, the sale continues...

Even though the Summer of Love party finally drew to a close at around 10:30pm last night, the psychedelic sale continues through the weekend. As you can see, there's a rather colorful selection of releases that are 10% off through the end of business hours (6pm) on Sunday. That means that at the time of this posting, you've still got 24 hours and 45 minutes to get your cheap psych on. Hurry in to save on our liberal selection with includes 13th Floor Elevators, Sly Stone, Country Joe and the Fish, The Zombies, Cream, Pink Floyd, The Remains, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Vanilla Fudge, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Donovan and The Yardbirds, to name but a few.

Summer of Love photos

Last night was a little bit hectic and a lotta bit awesome. For one thing, The Back Yardbirds TOTALLY rocked it. After treating us to a full hour of Yardbirds tunes (touching on all the big ones, from "Train Kept A-Rollin'" to "For Your Love" to "Heart Full of Soul"), the guys returned and gave the still-eager crowd a few songs by the Rolling Stones, The Who and The Animals.

Let us just say that Warren's praise-laden description of the band was actually right on, as we had countless customers come up and tell us how much they loved the performance. The response was honestly pretty astounding, rivaling that of the Wilco listening party madness from a couple month's back, with tons of crowd-sung, call-and-response action. If The Back Yardbirds had a CD, we would've sold out of it. Thanks to the band and thanks to the many fine folks who showed up and spent their Friday evening with us. Oh, and don't forget that The Back Yardbirds open for Ian McLagan at the Five Spot on July 12th.

Additionally, the beer was delicious, plentiful and quickly gone. Thanks again to our friends at Rhino for sponsoring this event. The psych-specific 10% sale went quite well, and anyone who showed up clad in tie-dye or other Summer of Love regalia received 10% off everything in the store. We love it when people have fun and get involved, and in those instances, we're more than happy to hand out a little reward.

For now though, we have some more cleaning to do (buncha savages!), so enjoy the photos below and be ready for another special event coming on Tuesday...
