Spin Cycle - 6/27/08

Speaking of Creative Loafing, everyone's favorite alt-weekly has re-taken up the practice of broadcasting best-seller lists from local record stores in a weekly Spin Cycle post on the Loaf's Crib Notes blog. We thought it was a good idea when they were doing it back when, and we're glad they brought it back. You can check out the latest one, which, of course, features yours truly, right here:

Vote for Decatur CD in Creative Loafing's Best of Atlanta 2008 poll!

It's that time of the year again, folks. You were good to us last year, and we sure appreciated it. But your duty as responsible, local-business-loving folks requires you to once again thrown down in the Creative Loafing Best of Atlanta annual poll. There are a couple categories (CD store and used CD store, natch) that best apply to us, but if you want to write us in under "bikini wax" or "beer selection" (just kidding on the latter: you had better vote Brick Store!), that's fine too. We're pretty flexible.

Now, we know there are a TON (seriously, 299 in total) of voting categories, but you only have to vote in 10 to be counted. And hey, after you vote for us in the two CD categories (hint, hint, nudge, nudge...again), you only have eight more! But you should vote for a ton. We know you love stuff around this great city, so let your voice be heard! Vote here:

Honky Tonk Angel book event update

Hot on the heels of our last book event, we're happy to remind you that on June 20th Ellis Nassour will be here to read from his new biography, Honky Tonk Angel: The Intimate Story of Patsy Cline. Nassour is a music-industry veteran, and has garnered piles of heavy praise for the book. We'll be providing delicious refreshments, but that's not all...

Caroline & the Ramblers, an Atlanta rockabilly/country act, will also perform. Starting at 7pm, the band will come on and play a couple songs (they'll be mixing Patsy Cline covers and originals in that same vein), then Ellis will talk about his book, then the band will play some more. It'll be a blast, no doubt.

You've got a couple weeks to get ready, and we suggest you start by reading some excerpts from the book and checking out the music of Caroline & the Ramblers. Think of it as the most fun homework assignment ever, then we'll see you on June 20th.

Emmylou Harris autographed guitar giveaway!

Above: The prize.

Check it out! Pardon the exclamation, but you can see above why we're excited! Our good friends at WEA recently dropped off a gorgeous Epiphone acoustic complete with Emmylou Harris' signature on it. We're gonna give that sucker away to some lucky Decatur CD customer, so stop by soon to drop your name and phone number into the official giveaway box. We're the only place in all of Georgia where you can win this awesome instrument, so don't miss out!

Above: The artistic shot.

Emmylou has a brand-spanking-new record out on Tuesday (June 10th) as well. It's called All I Intended to Be, and it's completely and fully approved by your good friends at Ye Olde DCD. Seriously, we think it's great, but you don't have to take our word for it. It's on one our listening stations right now, and you can listen to the entire record. That's how much we believe in it.

Above: The Eliot.

Meanwhile, the country-music legend is on tour right now, and making her way to Chastain on June 27 with support from Sam Bush, Jimmy Gaudreau and Moondi Klein. So, if an autographed guitar giveaway and a new album aren't enough to get your Emmylou fix, you can see her live at "Atlanta's favorite outdoor music experience." And if THAT is not enough for you, well, you have a problem. But we understand. After all, it's Emmylou!

Robert Hicks photos

By all accounts, our first book event was a pretty rousing success. Robert Hicks and his new tome, A Guitar and a Pen, brought in a nice crowd filled with people who were ready to drop coin on books and music. That's what we like to see, of course. The brew was a-flowin', as were Hicks tales, one in particular about eating a deceased relative! (That's one in the book, which you should still pick up here at Ye Olde DCD.) Fun times all around. Check out the photos...
